I often restore and colorize historical photographs from Guilan, Iran, my homeland, bringing fragments of its past into vivid focus. Through careful restoration and colorization, I seek to reconnect contemporary audiences with the region’s history, culture, and everyday life, while preserving the authenticity and details of the original photographs. For me, this work is not merely a technical process, but a way of preserving cultural memory and reconnecting with the place I call home.
I began this project in 2021, long before AI-powered tools made photo restoration and colorization widely accessible. Working with historical photographs from my homeland was then a painstaking process that required considerable time, specialized software, and expensive tools. Today, AI has made much of this work faster and more accessible, but achieving historically faithful results still requires careful human intervention, manual corrections, and close attention to the original image’s details.
For me, this project goes beyond restoring and colorizing photographs. It is a way of preserving the visual heritage of Guilan, reconnecting with its past, and bringing its history and cultural memory closer to contemporary audiences.
